Richard Gerstl (1883-1908) was an Austrian painter known for his association with the Vienna Secession and his emotionally charged portraits. He developed a unique style that blended elements of Expressionism and Post-Impressionism, showcasing his penchant for vivid colors and bold brushwork.

Gerstl's connection to the Vienna Secession, a prominent art movement, allowed him to interact with leading artists of the time, including Gustav Klimt. Despite his brief career, Gerstl made a significant impact on the Viennese art scene with his innovative approach.

One of the notable aspects of Gerstl's life was his involvement with the Schoenberg family. He created several portraits of the Schoenberg family members, most famously Mathilde Schoenberg. His passionate affair with Mathilde, who was married to the renowned composer Arnold Schoenberg, led to scandal and turmoil within the circle of artists and intellectuals.

Tragically, the affair and its aftermath took a toll on Gerstl's mental health. In 1908, at the age of 25, he took his own life, marking a poignant end to a promising career and a tumultuous chapter in the history of Viennese art. Despite his short life, Gerstl's work continues to be appreciated for its emotional intensity and innovative style.
