Mark Gertler (1891–1939) was a British painter known for his vivid portraits and post-impressionist and modernist style. Born to Polish-Jewish immigrants in London’s East End, he studied at the Slade School alongside artists like Dora Carrington and Stanley Spencer. His most famous work, Merry-Go-Round (1916), is a haunting anti-war painting praised by D.H. Lawrence. Despite early success, Gertler struggled with health, finances, and unrequited love for Carrington. He died by suicide in 1939, leaving behind a powerful legacy in British modern art.
