1871-1945 Italy
Anton Maria Mucchi was an Italian painter, intellectual, and cultural advocate whose work bridged portraiture, symbolism, and myth. Born in Fontanellato in 1871, he studied at the Accademia Albertina in Turin before spending time in Rome and Milan, while often returning to Lake Garda during the summers.
In the early 20th century, he settled permanently in Salò, where he became a central cultural figure. Mucchi was not only a skilled painter but also a dedicated researcher of local art and churches, deeply involved in regional heritage and artistic networks. He played a key role in founding Salò’s first civic archaeological museum, now part of MuSa, which also houses several of his works.
Though less known today, he was part of the cultural fabric of early 20th-century Lombardy.
