1593-1653 Italy
Artemisia Gentileschi was an Italian Baroque painter and one of the most important artists of her time.
Her life and career were shaped by her personal experiences, including her survival of sexual assault and the subsequent trial, which became defining moments in her work. Artemisia often painted strong, complex female figures, challenging the traditional portrayals of women in art. Despite the limitations placed on women in the art world she was able to start painting professionally by the age of 15 and became one of the first women admitted to the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence.
