Carl Gustaf Plagemann (1805–1868) was a Swedish painter who was influenced by Italian Renaissance art after living many years in Italy. His work reflected a romanticized style that was out of step with the tastes of the Swedish art scene, which leaned more towards realism and local themes at the time. Upon his return to Sweden in 1854 his isolation from fellow Swedish artists as well as his foreign influences, made it difficult for him to connect with the Swedish art community, leading to his work being largely overlooked.
