Leiv Eirikson oppdager Amerika (1893) by Christian Krohg depicts the Norse explorer sighting land on his voyage to Vinland around the year 1000. Painted during a period of romantic nationalism, it presents Leif as a heroic figure leading his crew toward the “New World.” In recent years, the work has been discussed in light of how such images can mythologize exploration and frame it from a Eurocentric perspective, overlooking Indigenous histories.
In 2022 the National Museum in Oslo labeled it Colonialist and moved the painting to storage. Followed public criticism it was later reinstated after an apology by the museum's director.
