1880-1938 Germany
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was a German Expressionist and one of the founding members of Die Brücke, a group that challenged the ideals and traditional values of the early 20th century, and instead tried to capture the raw energy of modern life. Often seen as the most prominent member, Kirchner’s bold, angular style brought the chaos and vibrancy of early 20th-century Berlin to life. He did so with striking scenes of city streets, cabarets, and nudes.
Despite his success, Kirchner's life was marked by struggle. The Nazis condemned his work as "degenerate", forcing him into exile in Switzerland. Isolated and battling mental illness, he continued to paint but ultimately took his own life in 1938.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's Artistin (Marcella) (1910) is a great example of the raw, emotive energy of the German Expressionism. The painting features 15 year old Marcella Sprentzel, one of Kirchner’s favorite models, captured resting on a sofa. Her striped dress and angular pose create a visual rhythm.
Marcella Sprentzel, born in 1895, was a girl from Dresden who, along with her friend Fränzi Fehrmann, served as a model for several artists of the German Expressionist group Die Brücke.
