1891-1934 Finland
Ilmari Aalto (1891–1934) was a Finnish painter and a member of the expressionist November Group, a collective that promoted modernism in Finland in the early 20th century. He was heavily influenced european Expressionism and used bold geometric forms and vivid color palettes, which was seen as innovative and controversial in Finland during his time. His life was cut short when he died in cancer aged 43, but despite his short career Aalto played a role in pushing Finnish art toward modernist ideals.
