Nils Dardel (1888-1943) was a Swedish modernist painter known for his innovative style. He was well connected within the artworld but was not able to reach broader success with the public during his lifetime, instead his artistic reputation grew after his death. One of his paintings, "Den döende dandyn" (The dying dandy), created in 1918, became an iconic symbol in the Swedish Gay Rights movement in the 1980s. His artwork also gained considerable value in the art market - one of his pieces setting a record as the most expensive modernist Swedish painting sold in 2012.
