1858-1930 Sweden
Nils Kreuger (1858–1930) was a Swedish painter associated with the Varberg School. After moving to Paris in 1881, he painted city views and landscapes in a subdued, tonal style strongly influenced by French plein-air painting. Rain, mist, twilight, muddy roads, people and horse-drawn carriages became recurring subjects, often rendered in muted greys and earthy colours. During the 1890s, his work became increasingly stylised under the influence of Post-Impressionism, particularly Gauguin and Van Gogh. Together with Karl Nordström and Richard Bergh, he developed a more decorative and atmospheric approach, using simplified forms, rhythmic lines and expressive colour.
