1905-1943 Italy
Romualdo Locatelli (1905–1943) was an Italian painter whose life and work took him from Italy to Southeast Asia, where he became known for his vivid, colorful portraits and landscapes. Born in Bergamo, he trained in traditional techniques but quickly developed his own style.
In the 1930s, Locatelli moved to what is now Indonesia where he painted local villagers, dancers, and lush landscapes. His paintings from this time, while realist in theme, often feature a loose, expressive brushwork that align with impressionists.
Tragically, Locatelli disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 1943 during World War II, somewhere in the Philippines, and was never seen again. This unresolved end has added a bit of intrigue to an already interesting life journey.
Today, Romualdo Locatelli’s work can be seen as both visually captivating and a product of its time, reflecting a Western gaze that romanticized Southeast Asia. We can appreciate his artistry while also recognizing the limited, outsider perspective he brought to his subjects.
