Sonia Lewitska

1874-1937     Ukraine

Sonia Lewitska (1880–1937) was a Ukrainian-born painter and decorative artist who became an integral part of the Parisian avant-garde scene. Born in Lviv, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Lewitska moved to Paris where she became immersed in the city's vibrant artistic community.

Lewitska's work encompassed a variety of styles, including Impressionism, Cubism, and later, Art Deco. Her art was characterized by bold colors, geometric forms, and a harmonious blend of Eastern European and French influences. She was particularly noted for her contributions to the Ecole de Paris, an artistic movement that included many notable immigrant artists in Paris in the early 20th century.

In addition to her painting, Lewitska was known for her decorative arts, particularly in the design of furniture and interiors, where she applied her keen sense of color and form. Her work, though not as widely recognized as some of her contemporaries, played a significant role in the development of early 20th-century art and design.
