Tyra Kleen (1874–1951) was a Swedish artist, writer, traveler and women's rights activist. Influenced by Symbolism and Theosophy she explored ritual, mythology, and non-Western cultures in both her art and life.

Tyra Kleen painted Åke Kistner in 1938, likely during their overlapping time in Bali. Kistner was a writer and cultural critic who collected ethnographic objects, and the background reflects their shared interest in myth and ritual. Both were drawn to travel and Eastern cultures.
